on your first visit to kalibre, either on kanary or release, it needs to download a minimal dataset that'll be used for the typing tests, especially for things like quote tests, sustained typing tests on books, etc. it's only about 24.3 MB in size, sourced from project gutenberg, plus ~3 MB more for the extended dictionary. and once they're downloaded, you no longer need internet to use kalibre, as i've made sure to include browser caching. you can even install the PWA version too :)
(the only thing that would make it unplayable offline is if you cleared the browser data, or if said clearing is done automatically. this will not be an issue if you self-host it.)
there are a total of three datasets at launch to be downloadable, and two of them are optional; if downloaded, kalibre will be able to suggest stronger quotes for training mistakes as part of its adaptive drilling.

sometimes i write on my website, and when my thoughts tend to be faster than i can accurately type, i make a lot of stupid mistakes. the same thing happens when i have to write something for school, even if i check for mistakes (my word processor goes red), i still don't like to do a lotta typos.
back then, i played typer shark deluxe and revisited it sometime in 2020. it's near-unplayable on my laptop now, so i wanted to make my own typing trainer with the fun of typer shark for the modern world. (not to say typer shark itself was no longer modern, tho!)
when i had the idea for kalibre, i wanted it to be "visit once, use forever, without internet", so it being a progressive web app (PWA) was the first time i'd ever done such a thing. i made it so that you could put your own text and make it part of the training (i tested this with my unpublished drafts!)
my favourite mode is sustained 60wpm; record is 11 mins. hope you have fun in kalibre kanary!
